Matt O’Connor, Managing Director of
The A&R Department,
is a music industry veteran with over 20 years experience in
the Australian market. His illustrious career has already
seen him work with some of the biggest artists in this
country, along the way building a reputation for
discovering, nurturing, developing and releasing his own
brand of “credible
mainstream” music.
Matt has a highly skilled ear for
music, and possesses an innate ability to identify hit
songs. This ability has seen Matt sell
over one million albums
nationwide.
In the 1990s,
Matt founded Mo Brown
Productions, where he
worked closely with Mark
Pope, (Executive Producer
of the ARIA awards). The company quickly become the
pre-eminent Hip-Hop and R&B label in this country and is
credited with single-handedly reviving the Hip-Hop and R&B
scene in Australia. One of the label’s acts,
Kulcha,
enjoyed extraordinary
success in Australasia, with a string of top-20 singles and
over 140 000 records sold.
Later, Matt was
recruited by Bomb Records
to be the fledgling label’s A&R Manager. One of his
first signings, Disco
Montego, had two top-10
singles and won two APRA Awards for “Beautiful” and “U
Talkin’ 2 Me”. Matt also unearthed and signed
Jeremy Gregory,
who within weeks was contracted directly by Warner Music in
the United States.
Because of his
musical credentials, A&R track record and most of all his
uncanny knack to detect hit music, in 2002 Matt was invited
to join Warner Music
Australia. His first
initiative was the introduction of the
R&B Super Series
compilations which, since their inception, have gone on to
sell over 250 000 copies.
Matt also worked
closely with Ed St John
and Lachie Rutherford,
having the creative dexterity to partner them with
heavy-hitting New Zealand Hip-Hop act
Savage.
Their first single, “Moonshine”, was recorded with
international superstar Akon
and went on to achieve gold certification, selling over
35 000 copies.
Matt then went on
to compile the critically acclaimed Straight From The Art
Australian Hip-Hop compilation which, upon release, was
awarded Triple J’s album of
the week. This success only
affirmed Matt’s reputation for releasing credible mainstream
music. At around this time Matt was also appointed A&R
Manager of Magic Dirt’s
most recent studio release, Snow White.
In 2003, Matt was
presented a demo by music manager Francis Coady of a
little-known act named
Thirsty Merc. Instantly
recognising the band’s overwhelming potential, he signed
them to Warner and began to work closely with them. Over the
course of the next twelve months, Matt, along with his
producer-of-choice Lindsay Gravina, guided the band in the
development of their songs and their sound.
The band’s debut,
self-titled album was released the following year and
spawned a string of smash-hit singles, such as
“Emancipate Myself”,
“In The Summertime” and “Someday
Someday”. The album stayed
in the ARIA charts
for more than 50 weeks and is now just days away from
achieving double platinum
status. The group were also
nominated for four ARIA
Awards and their song
“Someday Someday” was nominated for the prestigious
APRA Song Of The Year
award.
Due to the
phenomenal success of Thirsty Merc’s debut album,
The A&R Department
was hired and Matt was appointed A&R manager of the band’s
sophomore album, Slideshows. This release debuted at
number 4 on the ARIA Charts and has already achieved gold
status.
In 2007, having
achieved monumental success with Warner whilst concurrently
building a formidable reputation, Matt decided to leave the
major label and become Managing Director of
The A&R Department. Since then he has been working
with artists such as The Beautiful Girls, Shihad, Mia Dyson,
Cog, Epicure as well as continuing his work with Thirsty
Merc, Fast Crew and several others.
